Vice President of Ghana, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has joined traders and residents of Nungua Market in a nationwide clean-up exercise initiated following the directive of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama.

The exercise saw participants desilt choked drains, clear debris, and undertake sanitation activities aimed at improving the environmental conditions within the community.

The Vice President was accompanied by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim; the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo; and the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey.

Addressing the importance of the exercise, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang noted that the recent floods served as a painful reminder that protecting the environment remains a shared responsibility.

She stated that while government will continue to invest in flood mitigation measures, citizens must also take responsibility by ensuring that their daily actions help safeguard their communities.

The clean-up exercise also created an opportunity for engagements with residents and market women on practical ways to improve sanitation. Discussions highlighted the need for intensified nationwide clean-up activities during the dry season to ensure drains and waterways are cleared before the rainy season begins.

The Vice President emphasised that a proactive approach involving traditional leaders, local authorities, traders, and citizens will help reduce flooding and protect lives and property.

Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang expressed appreciation to the traders and residents of Nungua for their commitment and participation in the exercise.
