Cape Town, South Africa — South African football has been plunged into mourning following the death of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams, who has died at the age of 25, just weeks after representing his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Adams, regarded as one of South Africa’s brightest young talents, featured in all three of Bafana Bafana’s group-stage matches as the national team made history by reaching the FIFA World Cup knockout stages for the first time before bowing out to co-hosts Canada in the Round of 32.
South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, expressed his condolences, describing Adams’ passing as a devastating loss for the nation.

“It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams. South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his team-mates and the millions of supporters who watched him grow into a full Bafana Bafana international,” McKenzie said.
Police have confirmed that an investigation has been opened after the body of a 25-year-old man was discovered at a residence in Schotschekloof, Cape Town, on Saturday morning. Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of death, while officials have urged the public and media to avoid speculation as investigations continue.
Adams demonstrated remarkable strength during the World Cup by starting South Africa’s opening match against the Czech Republic just hours after learning of the death of his grandmother.
The South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) paid tribute to the midfielder, calling his death an immeasurable loss to South African football.
“Jayden had only recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, carrying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage and distinction. His passing is an immeasurable loss to his family, team-mates, clubs, the football fraternity and the country at large,” the union said.
Adams began his professional career with Stellenbosch FC before securing a move to Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025. During his time with the club, he helped the Brazilians win the Premier Soccer League title and the CAF Champions League, cementing his reputation as one of the country’s most promising midfielders.
He made his senior debut for South Africa in 2022 and was also part of the squad that reached the semi-finals of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations, before playing a key role in the nation’s historic World Cup campaign.
As tributes continue to pour in from across the football world, South Africa remembers a gifted footballer whose career promised even greater achievements. Further details regarding the circumstances surrounding his death are expected once the ongoing police investigation is complete.
