Ho, Volta Region — President John Dramani Mahama has inspected the progress of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) laboratory complex as part of his Resetting Ghana Tour of the Volta Region, reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening health research, innovation and medical education.
During the visit, President Mahama toured the state-of-the-art laboratory complex, a flagship project that is expected to boost Ghana’s capacity for advanced medical research, disease surveillance and vaccine development.
The President noted that the project, which began in 2014, had suffered significant delays, leading to cost overruns and an extended completion timeline. He stressed the need for critical national infrastructure projects to be completed on schedule to ensure value for money and accelerate national development.
Mahama reiterated the government’s vision of positioning UHAS as a leading centre of excellence in health sciences education, research and innovation, emphasizing that world-class research institutions require modern facilities to thrive.
He said the laboratory complex’s specialised pathogen research and vaccine development capabilities would complement the work of the National Vaccine Institute while strengthening Ghana’s health security and preparedness for future disease outbreaks.
The President also acknowledged the university’s broader infrastructure needs, including additional student hostels, lecture halls, a modern library and improved internal roads. He assured the university community that the government remains committed to investing in these facilities to support the institution’s growth.
President Mahama paid tribute to the late President John Evans Atta Mills, under whose administration UHAS was established, describing the university as a lasting legacy that continues to advance health sciences education in Ghana.
He expressed confidence that UHAS is on course to becoming one of Africa’s premier health sciences universities.
