The Government of Ghana has reportedly declined a planned state visit by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa following the killing of a Ghanaian national and renewed reports of xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals in South Africa.

According to Citi Newsroom, the decision comes after the death of 40-year-old Bashiru Isak, who Ghanaian authorities say was killed during demonstrations linked to renewed attacks against foreign nationals in South Africa on June 30, 2026.

The report says the Ghanaian government cited concerns over the safety of its citizens in South Africa and called for a thorough investigation into Isak’s death, as well as stronger measures to protect Ghanaians and other foreign nationals living in the country.

If confirmed by both governments, the reported decision would mark a significant diplomatic development in relations between Ghana and South Africa, where recurring xenophobic attacks have periodically strained ties over the years.
