The Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, on Friday, July 10, 2026, led staff of the Ministry of Finance, its agencies, and security personnel in a clean-up exercise at Alajo as part of the government’s response to recent flooding.
The exercise followed a directive by President John Dramani Mahama for mandatory nationwide clean-up activities across seven flood-affected regions. According to the Office of the President, the initiative forms part of measures to restore sanitation and reduce the risk of future flooding.

The exercise was attended by several government officials and traditional leaders, including President John Dramani Mahama, Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey, Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno, Ga Mantse Dr. Kelvin Nii Tackie Abia, and Deputy Minister for Defence Ernest Brogya Genfi.
Addressing participants, President Mahama thanked Ghanaians for participating in the exercise and acknowledged the release of GH¢150 million from the Contingency Fund by the Ministry of Finance to support the government’s Emergency Flood Relief and Mitigation Programme.

The President urged the public to maintain clean surroundings beyond the current exercise and cautioned against the indiscriminate disposal of refuse into drains. He also announced plans to make the nationwide clean-up exercise a monthly activity.
“Two days are not enough to finish this work, but we are going to institutionalize it so that at least one day in every month, all of us will come out and clean our surroundings,” President Mahama said.

He further stated that the Ghana Armed Forces would continue the clean-up exercise after the initial two-day period.
According to the Ministry of Finance, the initiative is intended to promote improved sanitation practices, encourage sustained community participation, and help reduce the risk of future flooding.
